Fourth Grade students, working with Karen Durkee from the AIWF, had the opportunity to visit two farms in their community. They visited the Tweed Valley Farm in Pittsfield and learned first-hand how to grow mushrooms. Mrs. Wisner and Mr. Simons explained the growing process to the students. Students also observed the koi pond, quail, and turkeys. We then visited Hinterland Farms and learned about organic farmer from Mr. Pilsmaker. He explained the process of growing vegetables from seeds to harvest to serving in his Mountain Creamery Restaurant in Woodstock. Mrs. Durkee then served the class a gourmet Vermont product lunch at the Killington Market. We learned a lot about how farmers diversify to be successful in Vermont.
