Enjoy Retirement, Mrs. Kahler!
Without question, this is the case for Mrs. Barbara Kahler, Sherburne Elementary School’s beloved sixth grade teacher of the past twenty-eight years. Prior to Sherburne, Mrs. Kahler taught in New Jersey and in Washington D.C., teaching every single grade K – 12. With a move to Killington in 1980, Mrs. Kahler settled into the sixth grade and found her niche. At this time, Killington’s Sherburne Elementary School on Schoolhouse Road was in its ninth year, and the classrooms were actually one great big room with no dividing walls ----open classrooms were the trend at the time.
Students from the past and students today share their appreciation of Mrs. Kahler’s organized, structured manner and her firm command in the classroom. Students realize that Mrs. Kahler’s classroom is one where respect and responsibility rule. With Mrs. Kahler at the helm, Sherburne’s sixth graders move on each year to seventh grade with a great amount of respect for themselves, for others, for the environment and for education.
Part of Mrs. Kahler’s secret to success in the classroom is the rapport building she promotes every day of her career. Besides spending time with her students during the regular school day, Mrs. Kahler spends time with her students each summer, in the early morning hours before school begins, and sometimes during the lunch and recess hour. In doing so, Mrs. Kahler gets to know her students, their challenges, their ambitions and their dreams. She brings this knowledge into the classroom where lessons are differentiated and expectations are modified to ensure that every child has an opportunity to grow and learn and enjoy success.
Thank you, Mrs. Kahler, for twenty-eight years at Sherburne and forty total years in education. Thank you for touching the hearts and minds of your students and your colleagues. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement!
