Guest author and experienced teacher, Liza Ketchum, whose Newsgirl is on the 2011 list, shared some of her trade secrets with the audience. The ceremony took place at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, particularly fitting since Randolph is the setting for Ketchum's recent Where the Great Hawk Flies.
Students who read at least five of the nominated books are able to vote for their favorite choice in the spring. Sixteen Sherburne students qualified to vote, and six were given tickets to the ceremony. The following students attended this year: Rory Haff, Maya Johnstone, Taylor Tolar, Liam VanHerwarde, Zev Ruben and Sarah Findeisen. This year’s winning author, Susan Collins, was unable to attend.
We thank both librarians for encouraging children to read DCF books and for organizing this trip to the DCF Conference. We also thank our parent drivers: Ellen VanHerwarde and Jim Haff.
