In fourth grade we are busy all year reading, writing, and exploring math science and social studies.
Reading - Fourth Grade students read a variety of books. They read, discuss and write about their reading. Some of the books they will read this year include: GREEEN MOUNTAIN HERO, BLACK DUCK, SURVIVING THE APPLEWHITES, BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE, POPPY, MANIAC MAGEE, and many others. They will have times during which they discuss their books in literature circle, led by the students themselvces. This gives them the opportunity to develop comprehension and thinking skills. In March they will read biographies and prepare for oral presentations during Famous People Day. In April they will read and write poetry to celebrate National Poetry Month.
Writing - Students practice writing essays on a variety of topics. The "Painted Essay" is the format they use during Writing Workshop time. They also write fiction and poetry.
Math - Students study math using the Investigations program. They also practice math skills using Spectrum Math and DIMS questions.
Social Studies - Most of the Fourth Grade year is spent studying Vermont. Students learn about Vermont's history and geography. They will also study the United States and develop a state report project using a variety of technology, such as Power Point, Kidspiration, Frames, etc.
Science - Fourth Grade starts out the year with Starbase, a hands-on program studying matter, force, and motion. They will also study geology, the Solar System, sound and light, and the systems of the human body.
Technology - Students learn to create Power Point presentations, PodCasts, and iMovies. They also work on their keyboarding skills using Type to Learn.
